The Importance Of Health And Safety While Shooting

Who or what are you protecting?

Yourself, others you’re shooting with but maybe even most of all the equipment you’re using. If that gets damaged or broken you’ll have to pay for the damages and nobody likes being out of pocket for a dumb mistake.

What is duty of care?

“a moral or legal obligation to ensure the safety or well-being of others” this is google’s definition of duty of care.

What is a risk assessment?

A risk assessment is a set-list of negative things that could go wrong. These can be anything that is a risk e.g. weather, tripping, water etc. A good risk assessment takes note of every possible risk and helps you to weight out what is best to do with the risks listed

What are hazards?

Hazards are things that are dangerous or risky when brought into the conversation. For example, if shooting outside, rain would be classed as a hazard as heavy weather could cause serious damage to equipment via water damage. Tripping would be a risk to both you and your equipment as if you fall over your tripod or something you’ll both come out hurt. Lifting cause do some damage to you depending on what you’re carrying, if just a camera it would be alright but carrying too much could do some damage to your muscles.
