Character Design

Initial character design research

During initial character design the essential style, concept and artwork is created. Therefore to do this you must take a deep look into the characters personality in order to accurately design her.

Personality traits of the character, and how they have formed into her physical being:

Personality traitHow this presents in her appearanceWhy/Meaning behind it
friendly & approachablepresented in the form of a flower. Consumers are likely to have active responses to approachable characters, and form emotional bonds that make the character popular. Meaning success for the creator.
Mellow and relaxedShown by her closed eyes and colour schemeShe is a mysterious character that appears wise and safe, as she represents neutral and calm colours, relating to her naturalistic existence being a flower.
spiritual/ flower powerthird eye and art styleShe has been created to appeal to a niche spiritual flower-power audience. Low-key creators can generally find success within smaller niche’s, rather than being lost under the giants that dominate the gaming/media industry.

Initial ideas

Initial idea: To create a flower-style female that relates to everything explained in the character’s personality above. Her voice would be soothing and have a slight echo.

Her third eye relates to a powerful God in the religion of Hinduism, Shiva, who is often depicted with a third eye, representing his wisdom and enlightenment—but also representing the power of destruction. I want to incorporate a third eye into my character as it would fit my character’s personality and style perfectly whilst adding character to her being. As she would have been too basic as a simple flower.

Keeping her face and petals shades of blue, her third eye a shade of orange (to contrast the natural element of her and represent her spiritual ora in her physical appearance and to show the consumer she is a mysterious character with more to offer than simply being a flower), and the rest of her body shades of green with a harsh black outline for a unique drawing style (similar to the Borderlands franchise). Mood-board of ideas presented here:

She should also sway in the wind as a flower would, and when she talks she uses her two leaves as arms. to walk she hops/jumps in a way that is styled to suit her calm and flowing aesthetic.

Here are some initial sketches of her face and her full body.

[insert the two photos of her as the pencil drawing here]

This will be very similar to her final design, as her features will likely remain the same as they represent her well, they will be improved with better drawing rather than changed. This character in these sketches has been re-sketched multiple times and detailed to a point where it is able to be used as the base for the final character design. Meaning the final design will look extremely similar to this sketch. Her design only began once I was entirely sure what I intended her to look like and this one initial idea has been tweaked enough to a point where I am sure I have created something I am happy with. For example, the face and petals were changed multiple times before finishing this sketch in order to create a higher quality character.

Explanation, Evaluation and Analysis

My character, named, Aurora, Is a flower-style female character that relates to Hinduism and has a hippy-style aura. This is created by her personality, mellow and relaxing and designed to promote peace-fullness and to attract consumers, as her protagonist approach makes her easily a favoured character.

Brutalist Architecture

Brutalist architecture could inspire my work by making my buildings appear more symmetrical. Brutalist architecture is good for this reason I think, as brutalism in this context means lots of repeating patterns. The term of brutalism actually comes from a pioneer architect and painter Le Corbsier, of ‘beton brut’, which means raw concrete in french. I believe the style of brutalism is great because overall the buildings end up matching up very nicely as a whole.

Essay linking art to games

Introduction

I want to talk about the borderlands art style known as “shotgun rhinoplasy”. The style is unique to this series, bashing together hand drawn comic book stylings with a very thick dark lining around everything. Now while comics of borderlands do exist, they came later than the games themselves. The style itself would have derived from other cell shaded comics, such as tank girl or other comics from that era. The gritty yet cartoony feel fits the series perfectly as a fun and gun shooter on a gritty run down planet, the inspiration and style almost perfectly fits the world, especially seeing as how borderlands is set in an almost mad max, tank girl like world.
